Our standards

Editorial Policy

This page lays out the rules we hold ourselves to. If we ever fall short of them, we want you to be able to point at this and call us on it.

Accuracy

We work hard to get the numbers right. Specs come from manufacturer documentation, and we cross-check claims against similar products when something looks off. Off-grid power is technical, and a wrong figure can lead to a bad purchase, so we would rather say "it depends" than hand you a confident answer we are not sure about. When the honest answer is a range, we give you the range.

Independence

We are not owned by any solar, battery, or power-station brand, and we do not accept payment in exchange for a good review or a higher ranking. Our recommendations are based on what we think is the best choice for a beginner, full stop. If the best pick for your situation is a budget product, that is what we will tell you, even when a pricier item would earn us more.

How recommendations are made

Our picks come from published specs, manufacturer data, patterns across real owner reviews, and direct comparison against the obvious alternatives. As we get hands-on time with hero units, we add those findings in. You can read the full breakdown on our how we test page. We label what is researched and what is hands-on, and we never invent testing we did not do.

Affiliate links

The site is reader-supported. Some links are affiliate links, which means we may earn a commission when you buy through them, at no extra cost to you. That money never buys a better review. See our affiliate disclosure for the details.

Corrections

We fix mistakes promptly and openly. If you find an error, an outdated spec, or a broken recommendation, please tell us through the contact page. When we correct something that materially changes a recommendation, we update the page so it reflects the right information going forward.
